Unisource Converting manufactures envelopes, drinking straws and coffee stirrers. Based in Jacksonville, Florida its busy plant produces up to 22 million units per day in a wide range of designs and sizes. Servicing a large number of customers daily in this fast moving environment makes customer relations management an important aspect of its business. Customer orders are maintained in a Microsoft SQL Server database and for many years, order entry has been through applications developed in Lotus Approach by Jerry Sikes, Unisource's principal programmer. The business has outgrown Approach and Jerry has been busy migrating these applications to a front-end he is developing with Microsoft .Net. A key part of the migration exercise was to develop an automated order confirmation system by e-mail. It was soon discovered that the size of these e-mails, including the HTML formatting characters, far exceeds the maximum allowed for a SQL Server, stored procedure variable and precluded the use of SQL Server, CDONTS and a SMTP server to generate the confirmations It was at this point that Jerry Sikes approached Northwind to see if OLServices, in conjunction with Microsoft Outlook, could provide a front-end system. OLServices can create HTML formatted e-mails without any size limitations and quickly proved to be the ideal solution. creates an HTML formatted e-mail confirmation, at the moment of data
